A Shot of Christmas Wisdom

This Christmas do yourself and your children a favor.

As the family is abuzz with talk of favorite apps and the youth are perched silently on the couch with their nose buried in their phones.

Seek out your elderly Aunt Pearle, Uncle Walt, or Grandma & Grandpa and ask them about their life.

They may show some reluctance to share, feeling you aren’t truly interested.

But, show them you care. Drill down and ask them about their first love, the jobs they have had, where they have lived.

Ask them to share their memories of growing up, about their siblings & parents.

Watch their face ignite as they relive their glory days.

“The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.”

– Andy Rooney

When given a chance – you will find the history and knowledge that is encased in the elderly is far beyond anything you learned in a classroom.

It is a blessing to have friends & family from the greatest generation.

The lessons you can learn from them can change your life.

For instance, there is this one:

“You don’t have to participate in every fight you’re invited to.”

or one of my favorites:

“You can’t believe everything you think.”

or this one,

“It isn’t up to us to fix everything.”

Go back and read those last lines again.

Let them soak in for a minute.

I am guessing that these lessons have just changed your life too.

Often they are soft-spoken and slight in frame – they may be easy to overlook in the chaos of the holidays.  But, when you see them, really see them, what you will find is a heart of brilliance and true grit.

You will find a pioneer spirit to be admired.

Their stories and advice pack a punch like nothing Google could offer.

This experience will not only be of benefit to you – but think of the great gift you will be giving them! Let them know that they have made a bigger contribution to the Christmas gathering than just making the gravy.

And always remember…  your children are watching.
